Make sure you bring bug spray also - the mosquitoes and horse flies are incessant - I have never been eaten up so bad and I lived on the gulf coast for years! One of the reasons we spent so much time on the beach was to get away from the mosquitoes at least. There are several private houses with wood for sale within 10-15 minutes of the camp - just look for signs and piles of wood on the side of the road. We built a nice camp fire at the beach using $20 of local wood - keep in mind that you can only use wood purchased in Maryland - we kept our receipt just in case there were any questions. We spent much time on the beach during the evening and night enjoying the cooler sea breeze. Our stay as Assateague was quite nice considering it was in the middle of a heat wave, lol. We made a large pitchers of rum runners for the beach and had an awesome time.(probably not supposed to promote that.ha ha) Just a very clean, well kept park.kudos to all the people who work there and do such wonderful job!!!!!! Definately bring your bug spray, but as I said with it on.I was just fine.I did want to make up a little to go into OC.I kept my makeup in a cooler and my smart daughter,Kait, brought a big mirror, and we set up a table down by their tent as our make up area.fun fun. Do bring a air mattress cause the sand would be tough to sleep on. They are beautys and are everywhere.except on the beaches and beach campsites.So for not being a camping girl.I cant wait to go back next year. Didnt feel like there were many rules at all.just be respecitful of the horses. You can burn a fire as late as you want however. If you do this remember to take a flashlight or lantern for when you get back to the campsites, cause it is pitch black. The beach is not commercialized.so there are so fewer people.and so much more peaceful.the highlite was we saw so many dolphins!!! We did go into Ocean City Md.a very short drive for some fun nightlife and a nice dinner. The rangers and employees are all really nice and funny. Even the portapottys are the largest and cleanest Ive ever seen. Its not a big public shower house.just small personal showers.really nice. They remind me of an outside shower at a beach house.they are clean and you can look up and see the sky. The sunsets on the bay are gorgeous and if you can get up early the sunrise is beautiful on the beach (which you are sleeping on!) As for the cold showers, they certainly arent bitter cold and actually on a hot day are a perfect temp. We actually rented two so we really had room and privacy. We will definately request the same one next year. It was tucked in the dunes with plants all around. Our campsite was large and sat up a little higher than the others and was much more private than some I saw. I got two mosquito bites (i get a lot more at home).and had one fly land on me(he didnt bite).the horses are completely fenced off from beach campers.so you never have to deal with them around you or trying to get food or their dung! At night a cool breeze comes off the ocean. Even the wood they sell you is cheap and burns beautifully. Our campsite had a firepit which was of course very cool at night. The weather was very very hot, and the ocean water was clean and just lke a cool bath.
Our campsite was on the beach, amazing! We were with my daughter and her boyfriend (experienced campers for sure!).they set up a canopy and made it into a lounge.with only one side to keep the sun out. I will return to Assateauge but only in cool weather otherwise I will stay where there is electric hookups.I was very leary of camping at Assateague,as I have heard all about the mosquitos, the horseflys, agressive horses(in campsites around food), the cold showers.and then there is the simple fact, i love to travel and stay in B&B's.or great hotels.but my husband talked me into this. A short drive to the boardwalk at Ocean City where you can dine and ride the tram car or is that Wildwood? Did not get to Seacrets this time but it is one of our favorite places with outdoor bars and stages. To cool for the beach but we did take a walk out on the sand and it is spectacular! There is off roading with a permit that goes on the beach. Nice bike riding on the island with a cool breeze. Fun to watch the ponies tear through the coolers and tents.
No shade and no electric equals no air conditioning but that is why we went in May. It made me so happy to have my own bathroom and shower so I can stay in beautiful places like this with no discomfort. I looked down the hole and was expecting to see the guy from the x-files come up and get me.
Bathhouses were pit toilets that smelled. We stayed in May in a 31 foot motor home.
